WHAT THE BIBLE SAYS ABOUT "BE STRONG AND COURAGEOUS"
"Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.”
There are times in life when courage is called for. The death of a loved one. The cancer that ravages our bodies. The divorce that breaks the heart. The loss of a job that makes us wonder about the future. At one time or another, each of us has been forced to face circumstances that fill our hearts with fear and make us wonder if God really knows what He is doing.
Take the children of Israel. Moses gets up in years, having led the nation to the very edge of the Promised Land. He knows that across the waters of the Jordan river is a land flowing with milk and honey, where his people will prosper. Yet, he also sees that it will not be easy.
There are giants in the hills. Enemies to be faced and conquered. People to stand firm against. He tells the Israelites that now is not the time for fear, but for courage. So, he gives them a final pep talk to bolster their faith. “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified…because the Lord your God goes with you” (Deut.31:7).
Take a close look at the words of Moses and you will discover a secret to overcoming obstacles. God’s Presence. Have strength, Moses says. Why? Because the Lord your God is with you. Have courage, Moses says. Why? Because God is with you. In fact, not only does God go with you, but in the heat of the battle, He will not leave you nor forsake you. The essence to facing life’s storms is found in knowing, walking, and living in the presence of an Almighty God.
“Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; (Ps. 23:4).
Again and again in the Bible, we see this spiritual principle. When the children of Israel faced the wilderness, it was God who led them by a pillar of fire. When a shepherd boy needed courage to face a giant, he declared the presence of God (you come to me with a javelin…I come to you in the name of the Lord). When the Israelites needed to be reminded who was truly God; the fire of God fell from heaven. When three Hebrew boys walked through the furnace, God was there, walking with them.
As Peter sank in the sea, it was Jesus who reached out and pulled him from the waves. When the leper needed healing, Jesus touched him. When the five thousand hungry souls needed to be fed, Jesus gave thanks, took what little was offered and performed a miracle. When you and I needed a Savior, “God demonstrated his love for us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us” (Rom.5:8). The Presence of God.
We are called to Be Strong and Courageous. God is right there walking with us.
