Have you ever wondered what "In God We Trust" means?
The words, in God, remind us that it is God who deserves our constant adoration and faith. He is the One who has fearfully and wonderfully made us, who has designed a plan for our lives, and who directs our steps. Without the love of the Heavenly Father, we would be lost for all eternity, adrift in a sea of our own selfish sinful nature, unable to bear the constant sorrow of our shortcomings. We would be men and women most miserable. Without hope. Without life. Without love.
There are many today who place their faith in the wrong things. They believe in the power of self-improvement. The power of financial gain. The power of personal agendas. They live IN these areas, investing the energy of their existence, only to find the moment after they close their eyes in death, that they have placed their eternal soul in the wrong thing. People, places, possessions are false substitutes for faith in the Living God. The words, In God, remind us that the object of faith matters as much as the act of faith itself.
The word, We, reminds us of the measure of God’s divine plan. His Word tells us that God so loved THE WORLD … (John 3:16). The truth is simply that God loves every person He has created. Regardless of nationality, or color, or background, God has a heart for you and me and for all humanity. His invitation to eternal life is a call to salvation for all the earth. Because God is no respecter of persons, His desire is that no man should perish (Acts 10:34).
The word, Trust, tells us the method of the salvation process. We are saved by grace, through faith (trust) and not of ourselves, it is the gift of God (Eph. 2:8-9). We cannot work our way into the heart of God. We cannot justify ourselves through our own works to gain eternal life. There is nothing that you or I can do to merit God’s gracious salvation, or to secure our place in heaven. We enter through eternity’s gate by belief, by placing our trust in the Living God.
Four simple words. Words that declare our allegiance and faith in an Almighty God, who loved us enough to die in our place to pay the penalty for our sin. Four simple words to convey the gospel of God. A simple phrase that cuts through the meaningless chatter of a world desperate to find meaning, purpose, and life.
