Was Jesus held in Prison?
Since we released this t-shirt, there have been some comments and questions about Jesus going to prison. Did Jesus actually go to a prison or jail before his crucifixion?
First off, the words "Jesus was held in prison" are not in the Bible the same way they are for the Apostle Paul. But does that mean He wasn't held in jail or prison?
We know that Jesus was bound and arrested, right? Matthew 18:12 says, "Then the detachment of soldiers with its commander and the Jewish officials arrested Jesus. They bound him."
And we know that Pilate offered to release a prisoner: He gave the crowd a choice, Barabbas, or Jesus in Matthew 27:15-17, "Now at the feast the governor was accustomed to releasing to the multitude one prisoner whom they wished. And at that time they had a notorious prisoner called Barabbas. Therefore, when they had gathered together, Pilate said to them, “Whom do you want me to release to you? Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?”
And in John's account of Pilate and Jesus, it seems even more so that Jesus was being referred to as a prisoner: "But it is your custom for me to release to you one prisoner at the time of the Passover. Do you want me to release ‘the king of the Jews’?”
Though the text doesn't describe the location where Jesus was held, we know enough to know that he was arrested as a criminal (who committed no crimes), and detained as a prisoner, until his crucifixion and death on a cross. Jesus was the most innocent prisoner of all time.
According to this paper called Prison, Prisoners, and the Bible, Dr. Christopher D. Marshall gives a compelling look at imprisonment in Bible times.
All of the men listed on this shirt were wrongfully arrested or detained and Jesus is our #1 favorite ROLE MODEL of all time. Therefore we feel great about including him in this list of role models who were wrongfully persecuted and arrested for speaking the TRUTH.
